Doug Wignall, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, International Director of Healthcare

As international director of HDR Architecture's healthcare program and a member of the firm's executive management team, Doug Wignall has a strong understanding of the issues surrounding the delivery of healthcare. Doug has been influential in the growth of the healthcare program's presence throughout the United States and abroad, as well as in various market sectors. During his 17 years with HDR, Doug has been involved with the development of a comprehensive group of service lines for HDR, including HDR Consulting as well as the firm's Medical Equipment Planning, Technology Solutions, Signage, and Wayfinding and Design groups. Doug was also involved in fostering the firm's collaborations with premier manufacturers to design flooring, fabric, furniture and room accessory products targeted primarily to the healthcare environment.

A highly respected, award-winning architect with broad design skills and talents, Jim is an industry leader in the design of children's healthcare facilities. Jim is the leader of an experienced team at HDR Architecture that recognizes the unique needs of this special patient population, and is dedicated to creating "healing spaces for little faces". A professional with 37 years as a creative designer and graphic artist, Jim is often a presenter in the field of pediatric healthcare design.

Product development stems from a need for something better. Interior designers and healthcare staff are sometimes frustrated with the products being developed by manufacturers for the healthcare market. Responding to these concerns, HDR has teamed with manufacturing companies to develop healthcare products when there was not one available to meet the needs of the client.

An environmental and graphic designer, Steve has been instrumental in HDR's product development endeavors. His portfolio includes design and development for a variety of products including furniture, flooring and fabric. As an industry leader, his 23 years of experience enables him to be recognized as a leader in design and communications.

Cyndi McCullough, RN, MSN, EDAC, Director of Clinical Planning

With more than 31 years of experience as a registered nurse in the healthcare industry, Cyndi brings a clinical and operational understanding to facility programming. LEAN certified, Cyndi is highly skilled in directing process improvement through work redesign, influencing and managing change, interacting with patients, staff and physicians, and building strong working relationships.

She is also the editor of a book, published in August 2009 by Sigma Theta Tau International, which addresses the rising prevalence of evidence-based design for healthcare environments. Titled, "Evidence-based Design for Healthcare Facilities," major topics of the book include aesthetics, healing environments, family-centered care, sustainability, benchmarking, transitions, efficiency and preparing for the future of healthcare.

Automation and the use of technology are becoming part of a comprehensive strategy to address the needs of 21st-century caregivers. Von has a keen ability to comprehensively assess needs, design appropriate solutions, and effectively implement and evaluate these solutions to achieve the desired results. Von is a seasoned health facilities director with over 25 years of expertise in facilities planning, operation and construction, technology utilization, human resources development, problem solving, and creating environments supportive of quality outcomes.

HDR's goal in hospital design is to create spaces that are flexible. Getting the most effective use of space and available technology is key.
