To keep pace with the demands of a growing population, Mecklenburg County had expanded its courts system piece by piece, leading to a fragmented system dispersed among four different facilities. The new courthouse consolidates all of the court groups and critical support services under one roof. In all, 39 courtrooms are included, with shelled courts to provide future flexibility and growth needs. The entrance is distinguished with dignified columns rising through four levels of covered exterior space, expressing a strong sense of place. The building is organized to provide clear, easily understood circulation to all the functions. At its center, public circulation encircles a day-lit atrium. A colonnade creates a distinctive architectural feature in the atrium, and supports a semi-circular roof terrace at the fifth level. The courthouse conveys a civic purpose both inside and outside of the building, serving as a focal point and gateway to Center City and reflects dignity and gravity of our judicial system. The project was selected for inclusion in the Justice Facilities Review 2008.
