The extraordinary significance of the Banner Bank Building isn’t easily seen by everyday passers-by. They may be intrigued by the translucent awnings on the 11-story multi-tenant building. They may also enjoy the hanging flower baskets, tree grates, flower pots and inviting benches. It’s what they don’t see, though, that distinguishes the LEED Platinum building from most other buildings: it was built for no more than a conventionally constructed building of similar size; it uses 50% less energy and 65% less potable water than a conventionally constructed building of similar size; it incorporates hundreds of sustainable design features, which added no additional costs nor increased the time needed for construction; it was built on a former brownfield site, offering new life to a downtown neighborhood; and it features a plethora of design elements that add flexibility and convenience to the diverse tenants who will occupy the building during its anticipated 100-year life.
