The Physical Sciences Complex will anchor the University of Maryland’s physical sciences campus, combining precise research with an inspiring atmosphere. The facility will streamline cross-disciplinary research by co-locating the Department of Physics, the Department of Astronomy, and the Institute of Physical Sciences and Technology. Highly controlled laboratories, incorporating temperature control and vibration and electromagnetic radiation isolation, will allow researchers to manipulate single molecules. A dramatic landmark for the campus--a lightwell that is a multi-story inverted elliptical glass cone--provides a view up to “the heavens,” and creates engaging areas for interaction within the building.
