The National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories is the flagship facility for a national network of secure biomedical research facilities. In addition to comprehensive core facilities that enable basic, translational and clinical research, NEIDL will also house BSL-4 and ABSL-4 laboratories that operate at the highest level of containment, balancing essential security requirements with the accessibility vital to its urban context.
This concept master plan incorporates residential, industrial, research, and manufacturing areas while engaging the existing topography. The naturalistic design of the new campus is achieved in both sustainable design and aesthetic details. The energy-efficient manufacturing building has inclined walls that act as solar controllers, while the buildings grass-covered roof evokes nature, blending seamlessly with the external environment.
The Advanced Measurement Laboratory offers an unprecedented combination of features designed to virtually eliminate environmental interferences, including special isolated concrete slabs, underground laboratories, and stringent temperature and humidity controls. For controlling temperature, vibration and power variables and integrating these criteria into a single space, the building won Laboratory of the Year High Honors in 2005.
